Although this will be short, do not underestimate the information that it contains. As in life, golf isn’t necessarily about making big changes, but little adjustments which can make all the difference. As in all things, there is a sequence, an order in which everything works best, and the Putt is one of those things that work much better if you follow that proper order/ sequence.The first thing that needs to be done in the Putt sequence is to decide on your line, and this definitely needs to be done before the stroke. When you are in the process of figuring out your line, pay close attention to the area of the green within a three foot radius of the hole. This is where your ball will be rolling slowly, and any break that will happen will most likely be more pronounced. You really need to figure out where your ball should be when it enters that “red zone” to use a football term.

All you want/need to be thinking about during the stroke, is how hard to hit the ball, not where. You can control how far the ball will go, by how far you bring back your putter during the back swing.

Once you hit the ball, the distance that the swing goes past the original ball striking position, should be exactly the same as the length of your back stroke.

You should think about putting the ball with just enough power to hit the ball about one foot pass the whole if you were to miss. With your ball going by the hole and remaining in “Gimmee ” territory, make sure you observe the break as it goes past the whole. This is important because it will give you the line you need for the “easy” tap in.

A big part of playing golf is your putting game.

It looks like it should be so easy to put that little ball into the hole, doesn’t it?  Once you get on the green, you find that putting that ball into the hole can be one of the things that can make or break your golf game.

Here are a few things that you can do to help your putting game.

• When you practice putting, use one ball to make it as much like a real game as possible.  This will help you to concentrate more efficiently than you would if you have balls all over the putting surface.  Practice putting daily.

• Putting does not only involve using the wrists.  Placing the palms of your hands where they face each other while putting helps to prevent one hand from dominating the other and helps them to work together for a successful putt.

• RELAX!  Make sure your muscles are completely relaxed when you putt!

• Ensure that your back and follow through strokes stay at the same length.

• You can keep your putter face square to the ball by keeping your right hand strong and left hand weak.

• Rely more on your shoulders than your wrist when you are putting.

• Keep your left wrist firm and still.

• Don’t lock your knees.  Relax them.

• Make sure that your feet and heels are shoulder-width apart.

• You can even practice putting at home on the carpet if weather is bad or you cannot make it to the golf course.

• Increase the stroke speed as you make contact with the ball.  You will want to keep the putter grip moving in the direction of the targeted hole.

• If you are trying to putt in a curved direction, you need to keep your feet parallel to the line that you want the ball to follow, not the hole.

• When you find a putter that you like and play well with, then you need to stick with it.

• Compete with yourself so that you get used to putting under pressure.

The success of the ball as it moves its way towards the hole depends on its speed. In other words, the pressure that you apply on your swing determines your success as a putter.

The Catch 22

If you hit the ball too hard, it will fly above and beyond the hole. When this happens, you will need to make an extended recovery shot. On the other hand, if you don’t put enough pressure on your swing, the ball will stop short of the hole.

Hitting the ball too hard will give you less break, or curve. For example, if you hit the ball too hard and calculated a six or seven inches of break, the ball will likely break just two or three inches and ends up missing the target. By hitting the ball too hard, even a putt that is only two feet can cause you to miss the hole and lip out, or goes back out.

Hitting the ball too gently, however, the ball will break more than your calculation and also miss the hole.

Therefore, the absolute success of the putt depends on the speed of the ball. Speed, along with distance, go hand and hand on the putting green.

If you think that your ball is safe once it hits the green, think again! There are unsuspecting obstacles, or a better term would be annoyances, that can deter a perfect putt.

When making your putt, the following unsuspecting problems may occur on the green:

1. Grass: Since when does trimmed short grass on the green become a problem? Although the smooth surface of the green is well kept and maintained, it is still grass after all, and it will grow. A small patch of higher-than-normal grass blades can get in the way of a perfect putt.

2. Leftover Footprints: It is common etiquette not to step in the same line of your fellow player’s shots on the green, so as not to create footprints. But it does not prevent the group ahead of you from trampling all over the green before you get there. You may not see them, but these footprints can interfere with the ball’s line of travel.

3. Untouched Grass Around The Hole: The green gets a lot of traffic from people walking all over it, making their putt shots, walking up to grab their ball, etc. But the 6 to 10 inches that surround the hole itself never really gets stepped on. This can create an uneven level of grass and cause the ball to move in a different direction.

Every putt you make should always be a straight one. Okay, so perhaps your shot will not end up going in a straight direction, but that’s not the point I am making here.

By saying that each putt should be a straight putt, I mean that you should stroke every putt straight down the target line.

In order to hit a straight putt, visualize a straight line that travels from the back of the ball directly down your target line. This straight line should stretch all the way to the hole or least to a point in which you selected so that the ball will break to the hole.

To better increase your chance of success, choose a spot on the target line to aim at.  Remember, the target doesn’t have to necessarily be the actual hole. It can be anything, so long as it allows you to get your ball rolling in the proper direction toward the hole.
