So, as a columnist who is tasked to write general news, you need to think carefully about what you are going to deliver, and you need to do broad research first. This is since your viewers is the total world, there is no room for mistake, and if you cause one, or write something that is false, then it will certainly affect the magazine that you are writing for.
In general, when writing general news, you should be careful of two very simple items, your subject and relation to the whole world. So, whatever happened in Hawaii that isn't something most important isn't valuable for general news.
